my old-new toy

The Virago was launched in 1981 as Yamaha’s first V-twin cruiser. Yamaha built the Virago in an attempt to capture new markets which was readily blooming with the likes of Harley Davison, Indian Motorcycle, Norton & Triumph just to name a few.

I’ve always enjoy riding motorcycles, but I never fancied the look of a cruiser until I stumbled upon custom cruisers called ‘bobbers’. These ‘less is more’ motive totally changes my perception towards cruisers.  And although a true bobber’s objective was to simply to go faster by removing unwanted parts, it really sparked a whole new generation of good looking cruisers.

This made it very easy when it came time for me to purchase my own little cruiser. To date my humble Virago has gone through some minor customization. The work began with a ‘peanut’ designed fuel tank, a single seat and a customized rear fender. Part of the engine was also chromed along with the rear swing arm, front shocks and drum brakes to give it a smooth retro finish. The rest of the bike was painted matt black with a rough finish to give it a little bit of a raw look.

The handlebars were swapped out for more aggressive drag bar design. A set of forward controls were added for some much needed leg room. The original massive muffler was removed to favour a more direct flow through resize inner tubes.

Although my Virago is far from an actual Bobber design, it turned out to be quite an experience to ride and own. The bike carries a certain degree of attitude and its simply fun cruising around at sane speeds. This is indeed money well spent! :B
